Dehydrated Backcountry GF Spaghetti w/ Veggies

Dehydrating your own backpacking meals for your next trip doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.

My favorite all time meal is as simple as homemade spaghetti! Using GF noodles, bison for protein and extra veggies for fiber!

Dehydrated Backcountry Spaghetti

Ingredients

1lb ground bison
1 Jar of Pasta Sauce ( I personally love this dairy free Vodka sauce)

GF Pasta Noodles (I love the taste and texture of Jovial) - I probably only use half of the box

2 handfuls of kale chopped

Salt & Pepper

Cooking Instructions

  1. Brown bison in large pot. Sprinkle with salt & pepper

  2. Once fully cooked and browned, remove bison from pan and place onto a plate lined with paper towel. This will help remove any extra fat that might linger.

  3. Fill stock pot with water, bring to a boil.

  4. Break spaghetti noodles in half and cook for 10-12 minutes.

  5. Drain pasta.

  6. Add pasta to sauce and mix together.

Dehydrating Instructions

  1. Prep food dehydrator and add parchment paper to each tray.

  2. Turn on food dehydrator 160 degrees F and dehydrate for 8-10 hours or until crispy.

  3. Rotate trays once every hour while dehydrating.

  4. Remove each tray from dehydrator and let cool.

  5. Once cooled, break up spaghetti and package each tray into a storage container, Ziploc bag or vacuum sealed bag- (I store in the freezer)

I scoop out about 1- 1.5 cups of dried mixture for one meal in the backcountry.

Rehydrating in the Backcountry 2- Ways

Using backcountry stove:

  1. Add dehydrated spaghetti to pot.

  2. Add enough water to the level of the spaghetti inside the pot.

  3. Let spaghetti sit in pot with water, covered, for 5 minutes.

  4. Bring water and spaghetti to a boil.

  5. Stir spaghetti.

  6. Cover and remove from heat.

  7. Put covered pot in stove cozy.

  8. Let pot sit covered in cozy for 20 minutes.

  9. Give rehydrated spaghetti a quick stir.

  10. Enjoy!

Rehydrating in a bag: Using Cook In Bags

  1. At home place 1 - 1.5 cups of mixture in the bag.

  2. At camp, boil water

  3. Add enough boiling water to cover the mixture

  4. Stir

  5. Depending on your elevation you may need more water and more time for rehydration

  6. Around 10 minutes- stir and add more boiling water if you need

  7. Around 20 minutes should be rehydrated completely

Enjoy and stay nourished!!
